Ground Rules from Week 2

Hi all,

Here are the 'ground rules' we agreed on in Week 2 that will hopefully make the term interesting and run smoothly for everyone:

Students:

Come prepared do reading – combine reading with in-depth thinking about key ideas

Share own ideas about reading

Everyone participates in discussion

Be willing to give personal perspective

Teacher/facilitator:

Guide reading, questions about reading

Give empirical/case study examples

Problematize answers, help people think more deeply

Facilitate discussion – don’t smother ideas but also make sure key points are made

Different ways of learning, more different styles (exciting?)

Use different formats

All:

Respect different ideas

Focus on understanding key ideas deeply – not TOO broad

Connecting theory to real-world events, ideas, media

Acknowledge and embrace cultural and social differences within the class

Engage with each other

For next week

Activity for Week 3 - the Public Sphere

Next week we will be holding a mock-trial based on the readings on the public sphere.

The charge is:

THE INTERNET DOES NOT CREATE A PUBLIC SPHERE

1.  In the comments section please add links to articles/blogs/social networks/anything that you think demonstrates either that:
a. the internet DOES create a public sphere
or
b. the internet DOES not create a public sphere

2. make sure you leave a one-sentence/word comment saying whether you think your example is positive or negative
